September 09, 1998|JOHN CANALIS

A 48-year-old man died after his car went over a cliff at Gable Street and Camino Capistrano on Monday and landed upside down on Pacific Coast Highway, according to sheriff's deputies.

Witnesses told deputies the driver appeared to accelerate right before his 1990 Ford Mustang convertible went off the cliff about 6:30 p.m., said Lt. Hector Rivera.

The accident remains under investigation.

Authorities withheld the name of the man, who lived in San Clemente, pending notification of relatives.
