Field Goal Attempt Is Wide; Savanna Defeats Kennedy

September 12, 1998|MIKE BESACK

Kennedy quarterback Mark Cook did all he could to carry his team but his last-second, 29-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left, giving visiting Savanna a 30-27 victory at Western High School Friday night.

The attempt came after a fumble by Savanna tailback Jason Brown at the Kennedy 40-yard line with 1:47 remaining. Cook led Kennedy to the Savanna 23-yard line 17 seconds left when a Savanna interception--which would have ended the game--was wiped out by an illegal substitution penalty.

Before the missed field goal, Cook had dominated the game, blowing past Savanna defenders for 101 yards rushing, mostly from the shotgun formation, and completing 10 of 31 passes for 125 yards. He also had an interception return for touchdown called back.

Savanna's Brown slashed his way to 173 yards in 20 carries to lead all rushers.

The game had the makings of a rout as Savanna took a 16-0 first quarter lead. Kennedy seemed to have no answers for the Rebels' eight-man offensive fronts, but was able to regroup to score 19 consecutive points to take a 19-16 fourth-quarter lead.

Savanna took the lead for good on its first drive of the fourth quarter as Josh Cunningham ran in from one yard to make it, 22-19. The Rebels then successfully ran in a two-point conversion.
