Backhoe Operator Punctures Gas Line

September 15, 1998|S.J. CAHN

An electric company worker punctured a gas line with a backhoe Monday, cutting off gas to about 200 homes south of Los Angeles Avenue.

The leak, which occurred about 8:45 a.m. on Los Angeles Avenue at Socrates Avenue, did not pose a danger to nearby homes, said Joe Luna of the Ventura County Fire Department. Most of the gas immediately dissipated.

With firefighters standing by, workers rerouted the gas line around the break and restored service to all but a few of the homes by about 11 a.m. Los Angeles Avenue reopened about the same time.

Workers had been modifying the traffic signal at the corner to handle additional traffic at a new post office.
