New Park to Give Kids Room to Play

September 16, 1998|PAULA PISANI

With soccer season underway, Gil Ramirez has a new reason to be confident that this year Oxnard will have enough playing fields for children.

The reason: a dedication ceremony is nearing for the 26-acre Southwest Community Park. The $850,000 park will provide space for soccer, softball and baseball, and open space for residents.

"This is a welcome addition. It will help ease the strain we have now," said Ramirez, acting superintendent of the Oxnard recreation department. The park, at 5th Street and Patterson Road, has been in the planning stage for 10 years. The city received the property from the Ventura County Community Foundation.

The first phase cost $850,000--including a $350,000 state grant--and features open space play areas, two soccer fields and goals, three baseball backstops and two parking areas.

Mike Henderson, superintendent for parks and facilities for Oxnard, said the next phase will get underway when funds become available. The phase will include a bigger backstop, infield areas, additional lighting, paving the gravel parking lots, as well as new restrooms, snack bars and basketball courts.

The dedication ceremony for Southwest Community Park will be held Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. at 5th Street and Patterson Road.
