Power Failure Closes Roller Hockey Rink

September 16, 1998|LESLEY WRIGHT

Stuart's Roller World abruptly closed the doors to its roller hockey rink Monday after the building's transformer blew out Sunday night.

Owner Stuart Silver said all sporting activities have been moved to Glacial Gardens in Lakewood, or players can get a refund of any payments.

"We're working off of generators now and we're looking for another location," Silver said Tuesday. "We still want to stay in business."

The roller hockey rink has more problems than its loss of power, city officials said.

The Planning Commission revoked the rink's conditional use permit last month, citing problems with neighbors and required work that was never done on the building, said Joel Rosen, a planner with the city.

Silver said he plans to appeal that decision at an Oct. 6 City Council meeting.

In the meantime, he added, Stuart's has made nearly $2,000 in refunds to players and has moved other games to Lakewood.

For information on the status of the games, call (714) 871-8761. Glacial Gardens can be reached at (562) 429-1805.
