Plant Expected to Cut Water Softener Use

September 18, 1998|PAULA PISANI

A new $15.3-million treatment plant should eliminate the need for home water softeners or carbon filters for most Port Hueneme residents, water officials say.

They say the plant, which will open next month, is expected to eliminate many of the complaints residents have about the city's water--that it's hard, cloudy and smells and tastes awful.

Jim Passanisi, superintendent of the Port Hueneme Water Agency, said the new plant, designed to filter brackish water, will allow the city to resume its contract with the United Water Conservation District.

Because of the plant, Passanisi said an estimated 75% of the customers who were paying for special water-filter systems will no longer need them.
