Strong Singles Play Lifts Westlake to Tennis Win

Freshmen Nina Yaftali and Audra Dickey swept three sets each to help Westlake High to a 13-5 nonleague victory over Santa Barbara on Thursday at North Ranch Tennis Club.

Westlake (3-0) won eight of nine singles sets overall, including all three in the first round. Santa Barbara (0-2) won all three doubles sets in the first round to forge a 3-3 tie.

In other girls' tennis matches:

Burroughs 12, Hoover 6--Sophomore Dragana Ognenovska lost one game in three sets for Burroughs (2-1) in a nonleague match at Burroughs.

Jenny Wooldridge and Christine Banian lost four games in three sets at No. 2 doubles for Burroughs.

Calabasas 18, Alemany 0--Jacqueline Yano, who usually plays doubles, was at No. 1 singles and helped the Coyotes sweep nine singles sets by 6-0 scores in a nonleague victory at Cal State Northridge.

Calabasas (3-0) also won eight of nine doubles sets by 6-0 scores.

Louisville 11, Oak Park 7--Katie Gallant lost only one game in a No. 1 singles sweep for host Louisville (2-2) in a nonleague match at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Club.

St. Bonaventure 15, Channel Islands 3--Singles players Breanne Henkelman and Alyssa Halcomb each swept three sets and St. Bonaventure (4-0) won eight of nine singles sets overall in a nonleague victory at Channel Islands.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Notre Dame def. La Canada, 13-15, 15-10, 15-11, 15-8--Stephanie Berger had 12 of her 18 kills and seven of her 13 digs in the second and third games to help Notre Dame (3-0) rebound from a first-game loss in the nonleague match at La Canada.

Sara Plumber added nine blocks and Nevada Blonstein had 37 assists for Notre Dame.

Chaminade def. Granada Hills, 15-11, 15-9, 15-7--Abby Hedgepeth had 11 kills and Delaney Menell added eight kills for Chaminade in an intersectional victory at Granada Hills.

Softball standout Maureen LeCocq, in her first season of varsity volleyball, had six kills for Chaminade (3-0).

San Marcos def. Buena, 15-5, 15-6, 15-4--Buena setter Janee Richards had four blocks and 12 assists, but the Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1) fell in a Channel League opener at San Marcos.

Louisville def. St. Bonaventure, 15-11, 3-15, 15-11, 15-8--Colleen Hamlin had 22 kills and 15 digs and Megan O'Connell had nine kills and 13 digs for the Royals (2-1) at Louisville.

Setter Darcy Pollan had 44 assists for Louisville.

Crescenta Valley def. Alemany, 15-13, 16-14, 6-15, 16-14--Chrissy Centeno had 16 kills and eight blocks for Alemany (2-1) in a nonconference match at Crescenta Valley (1-1).

Flintridge Sacred Heart def. Mayfield, 15-5, 15-5, 15-6--All 13 of Flintridge Sacred Heart's players saw action and Megan Hosp led the Tologs with 14 kills and four aces in a nonleague victory at Mayfield.

Sarah Skeehan added 10 kills and Gloria Borges had 35 assists for Flintridge Sacred Heart (3-0).

Littlerock def. Burbank, 15-3, 15-12, 15-9--Teri Castrellon and Megan Mance each had 14 digs and Blake Averill had four kills in 11 chances for the Lobos in a nonleague victory at Littlerock.

Bell-Jeff def. Burroughs, 12-15, 17-15, 16-14, 17-15--Lari Williams had 27 kills and six blocks for Bell-Jeff (1-2) in a nonleague match at Burroughs (0-3).

Ventura def. Dos Pueblos, 15-7, 15-4, 11-15, 15-5--Senior outside hitter Holly McGarrah had 19 kills and four aces for Ventura (1-0, 1-0) in a Channel League opener at Ventura.

Royal def. Newbury Park, 15-12, 15-11, 15-2--Michaela Skelly served 11 points, including an ace, and had 10 assists for Royal (2-1, 2-0 in league play) in a Marmonte League match at Royal.

BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY

Harvard-Westlake 15, Crespi 45--Josh Sohn clocked 17:21 to lead a Wolverine sweep of the first five places in a Mission League opener at Malibu Creek State Park.

John Luna was second for the Wolverines in 19:19.

GIRLS' CROSS-COUNTRY

Louisville 19, Harvard-Westlake 59--The Royals, paced by winner Mariel Holcomb, had 10 of the top 11 finishers in the Mission League opener at Malibu Creek State Park.

Holcomb, a junior, ran 20:58 over the three-mile course.

Senior teammate Kim Utterson finished third in 21:49.

GIRLS' GOLF

Nordhoff 141, Westlake 178--Beth Allen shot 39 for the second consecutive match, including a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole to lead the Rangers (2-0) in a nonleague match at Westlake Golf Course.

La Reina 132, Alemany 186--Jennifer Marshall won medalist honors for the third time in three matches to lead the Regents (3-0) in a nonleague match at Los Robles Golf Course.
