Adult Titles in Stores Must Be Covered

September 19, 1998|CHRISTINE CASTRO

Liquor stores and bookstores will be required to cover adult magazines and books on the racks, the City Council decided Thursday in a unanimous vote.

City and police officials said they had received numerous complaints from adults shocked at what is visible to children in stores.

"Kids could walk into these places after school and see what they shouldn't see," Mayor Dorothy Rush said.

Under the new ordinance, store owners will be required to use blinders to cover the bottom two-thirds of all publications that depict nudity and sexual conduct and other adult material. Violations can result in a misdemeanor charge.

"I would like to get rid of them completely," Rush said of the adult materials, "but we can't do that."
