Matadors Lose on a Heady Play

An own goal by midfielder Luis Castro of Cal State Northridge gave Michigan State a 2-1 victory over the Matadors in overtime in the first round of the San Diego tournament Friday at the University of San Diego.

Castro headed the ball over the head of goalkeeper Christian Perez 2:54 into overtime.

"I don't know what [Luis] was trying to do," Northridge Coach Marwan Ass'ad said. "We had a meeting after the game. We forgave Luis immediately."

Northridge (0-3) outshot the Spartans, 15-9. Perez had two saves.

James Whitmore's penalty kick in the 50th minute gave Michigan State (5-1) a 1-0 lead.

Mark Fitzpatrick evened the score for Northridge with a goal in the 56th minute. Castro and Federico Arroyo assisted on the play.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Canyons def. Antelope Valley, 17-15, 5-10, 15-11--Jennifer Carter had five of her 12 kills in the second game and Mary Keen had five of her 10 in the third game to help the Cougars (2-0) in a nonconference match at Canyons.

Lyz Rhodes , who had four aces, helped the Cougars rally from an 11-5 deficit in the first game.

CS Long Beach def. Pepperdine, 15-12, 15-8, 15-6--Jamie Hill had 20 kills and Lindsay Phillips added 14 kills for Pepperdine (4-3) in a first-round match of the UC Santa Barbara tournament.

Dillard Benishe had 16 kills in 22 attempts for Long Beach (8-0). She added 12 digs, five block assists and two aces.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Moorpark 2, Santa Barbara 1--Brenda Escobar scored both goals for the Raiders in a Western State Conference game at Santa Barbara.

Michelle Pentreath and Tara Byler had assists for Moorpark.

Pepperdine 3, Long Beach State 2--Freshman forward Kate Desmond had one goal and two assists for the Waves (3-2-1) in a nonconference victory at Pepperdine.
