September 20, 1998

Monte Gutowski connected with Andre Velasquez on a 48-yard touchdown pass play with 25 seconds left to give the Marauders (1-1) a nonconference victory at Antelope Valley.

Gutowski, who completed eight of 14 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns in his first start, led the Marauders back from a 14-0 second-quarter deficit.

Gutowski threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Travis Alkire to cut Canyons' lead to 14-7 late in the second quarter.

George Garcia of Canyons fumbled the ball away on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter and Tyree Booker scored on a one-yard run seven plays later to tie the game, 14-14.

Booker had 81 yards in 18 carries.

Canyons (1-1) took a 7-0 lead on a 63-yard touchdown run by George Garcia early in the second quarter. The Cougars upped their lead to 14-0 when Peter Dirksen hit Jason Kitchens on a 26-yard scoring pass.

Dirksen completed only four of 14 passes for 84 yards with one interception. He hit Mark Hamilton on a 51-yard pass play to put the ball on the Marauder 11 with seven seconds left in the game.

Two plays later, defensive back Bobby Ante tipped away Dirksen's pass as time expired.
