During the last third of gestation, the fetus is essentially growing, putting on the majority of its birth weight.

MONTH SEVEN

Eyes open, taste buds form. Some evidence of personality appears. Twelve inches long, 3 pounds.

MONTH EIGHT

Bones harden, but head remains soft and flexible for delivery. Sixteen inches long, about 5 pounds.

MONTH NINE

Testicles have descended. Nails cover fingers and toes. Fetus secretes a chemical to trigger birth process.
