September 22, 1998|BARBARA MURPHY

California Amplifier in Camarillo suffered a loss of $837,000 or 7 cents per share for the second quarter ended Aug. 29.

A year earlier, the company reported net income of $204,000 or 2 cents per share. Second-quarter sales were $8.3 million compared with sales of just more than $13 million for the second quarter a year earlier.

"Second-quarter sales were affected by continued decreases in wireless-cable sales," said Chief Executive Officer Fred Sturm. "Despite the loss, we have improved our balance sheet since the beginning of the fiscal year. Cash has increased $1.5 million to almost $6 million, while accounts receivable and inventories have decreased by a combined $2.1 million."

California Amplifier designs and manufactures amplifiers, downconverters, antennas and integrated products to receive microwave signals used primarily in conjunction with multichannel television systems.
