In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Cal State Northridge will host a series of community events this weekend to highlight the campus' history and academic development, university officials said.

The three-day event, "Founders' Weekend," will celebrate the university's evolution from a branch of Los Angeles State College to a modern state university, said CSUN spokeswoman Carmen Chandler.

"We're really very excited, and we're hoping that the community takes advantage of our invitation and joins in the celebration with us," Chandler said. "We're not only marking the anniversary here on campus, but we're also marking our relationship with the Valley community and we're really proud of that relationship."

The celebration kicks off with a Friday buffet reception at the Business and Education Courtyard. The reception will recognize the university's eight colleges, except the College of Arts, Media and Communication, which will host its own reception in the Music Building courtyard. Both receptions are free of charge and will be from 5 to 7 p.m.

Other Friday activities include:

* A cocktail reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on the Oviatt Library portico in the center of the campus to kick off a special exhibit of the university's archives.

* Musicians Roger Wilke and Sandra Kipp , both CSUN alumni, will headline a chamber music concert at 9 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall courtyard. Cost is $10.

Saturday's activities will include:

* An 11 a.m. brunch honoring former CSUN presidents Ralph Prator and James Cleary and current president Blenda Wilson at the Grand Salon of the University Student Union, on the east end of campus. Cost is $15 and reservations are required.

Sunday's events will include:

* A luncheon at the University Club of the University Student Union at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $18 a person, reservations required.

* A concert by French classical guitarist Olivier Chassain at the Recital Hall in the Music Building at 4 p.m. Cost is $12.
