SANTA CLARITA — Armed robbers reportedly escaped with $200,000 in jewelry Tuesday after holding up a northern California jewel dealer in the parking lot of a Stevenson Ranch motel, sheriff's deputies said.

The unidentified victim intended to spend the night when he stopped at the Comfort Suites motel on The Old Road near Lyons Avenue around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, said Lt. Daniel Castillo of the Santa Clarita sheriff's station.

The man was removing two jewelry cases from his car when two men with handguns approached, Castillo said. The robbers took the cases and fled in a black four-door Japanese-make car. Two accomplices remained in the car during the robbery.

Castillo said detectives had yet to identify the robbers or to determine whether they knew the victim was carrying the jewelry. The victim estimated the value of the stolen jewelry at $200,000, Castillo said.
