LONG BEACH STATE WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

* County connections: Tayyiba Haneef of Laguna Hills, Kristy Kierulff of Esperanza, Misty May of Newport Harbor, Melissa Ohta of Cypress (Cerritos Whitney High) and Silvia Panak of Katella.

* Worth noting: May, a senior setter, has been a key player in Long Beach's recent dominance in volleyball. May was the Division I player of the year leading Long Beach to a 33-2 record, reaching the Final Four before losing to eventual national champion Stanford. She has been the Big West player of the year the last two seasons, and was freshman of the year in 1995.

* Appearing locally: Long Beach plays at UC Irvine Oct. 30 and at Cal State Fullerton Oct. 31

MARYLAND WOMEN'S SOCCER

* County connection: Riki-Ann Serrins of Santa Margarita

* Worth noting: Serrins, a sophomore goalkeeper, played in 12 games as a freshman and is expected to split time in goal with another sophomore, Ali Wolff.

MICHIGAN WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

* County connections: Joanna Fielder of Newport Harbor and Amy DeCinces of Mater Dei

* Worth noting: Fielder is expected to take on a bigger role for Michigan this season, replacing the graduated Sarah Jackson, a Big Ten honorable mention selection last season.

PEPPERDINE WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

* County connections: Julie Hinsche of Huntington Beach, Melissa Plass of Fountain Valley and Lindsay Phillips of Marina. Jamie Hill is a transfer from UC Irvine

SANTA CLARA MEN'S SOCCER

* County connection: Scott McLain of Irvine

* Worth noting: McLain, a freshman, was a first-team Sea View League selection last season.

SANTA CLARA WOMEN'S SOCCER

* County connection: Kathleen Celio of Rosary

* Worth noting: Celio, a sophomore, has moved into the starting lineup as a midfielder for Santa Clara, ranked second in the nation.

TOLEDO WOMEN'S SOCCER

* County connection: Amanda Brown of Cypress

* Worth noting: Brown, a junior, set a school record with a goal in the first 45 seconds of play against Youngstown State. Brown's goal in a 3-1 victory was the fastest in school history.
