Savanna Lights Up Canyon

September 26, 1998

NORTH COUNTY

Jason Brown scored two touchdowns and rushed for 141 yards in 14 carries to lead Savanna past Canyon, 36-0, Friday at Glover Stadium.

After the game's start was delayed 45 minutes because lights in the stadium were not working, Savanna took a 28-0 lead in the first quarter.

Chris Hutton gained 100 yards in 12 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Josh Cunningham also scored for Savanna (3-0). Canyon drops to 1-2.

CENTRAL COUNTY

Van Hoorebeke, Oilers Roll On

Damon Van Hoorebeke scored three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving, as Huntington Beach (3-0) beat visiting Long Beach Millikan, 28-6. The Millikan touchdown, which came in the fourth quarter, was the first surrendered this season by the Oilers.

Shaun Shuck set up Van Hoorebeke's first score when he intercepted a pass. Van Hoorebeke eventually scored on a one-yard run.

Schuck, who led the Oilers in rushing with 145 yards in 19 carries, then scored on a 55-yard run with a minute remaining in the first half for a 12-0 lead. Both extra-point attempts failed. Van Hoorebeke scored second-half touchdowns on a 53-yard run and on a two-yard pass from quarterback Jeff Emerson.

* Saddleback 14, Santa Ana Valley 10: Quarterback Victor Ortiz completed nine of 17 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown, leading Saddleback to its first victory of the season.

Ortiz connected with Pedro Matar in the second quarter on a 10-yard touchdown pass, giving Saddleback (1-2) a 7-0 lead.

Gerald Norman gave Saddleback a 14-0 halftime lead, scoring on a one-yard run.

Santa Ana Valley (0-3) was held scoreless until the final quarter when Bryan Save scored on a nine-yard pass from Miguel Guerrero. Santa Ana Valley capped the scoring with a safety with three minutes left in the game.

* Ocean View 16, Century 13: Ocean View's Scott McMahan made a 21-yard field goal with five seconds left to lift Ocean View (2-1), which overcame a 13-0 halftime deficit.

McMahan missed his first attempt, but got a second chance after Century was penalized for roughing the kicker.

McMahan's 42-yard pass to Phillip Smith set up the field goal. McMahan completed 13 of 37 for 240 yards. Tauris Smith scored on an 84-yard pass and Seshai Houston on a 24-yard pass, both from McMahan, in the third quarter.

Ocean View's two victories already are more than last year's total, and match its 1996 total.

SOUTH COUNTY

San Clemente Wins Easily, 31-0

Chris McCormick rushed for two touchdowns, including one for 36 yards, and James Allen rushed for two others as San Clemente scored a 31-0 victory over Aliso Niguel.

Tim Hollis added a 30-yard field goal for the Tritons (1-2).

Aliso Niguel dropped to 0-3.

The defense came up with a huge performance for San Clemente, which got a stellar performance from linemen Adam Little, Justin Tomerlin and Mike Calveitti. Aliso Niguel's best scoring chance came when it reached the 12-yard line, but missed a field- goal attempt.

The biggest performance of the night, though may have belonged to San Clemente linebacker Danny Montecinos had a big game, with one interception and a fumble recovery.

Chris Smith also had an interception.

* Garden Grove 24, Estancia 7: Ricardo Cepeda scored on a 38-yard fumble return with 4:14 remaining in the first quarter to give Garden Grove a 10-0 lead.

Miguel Medina added a touchdown on a 70-yard pass from Matt Crippen to extend the Argonauts' lead in the third quarter with 9:22 left. Crippen completed five of 16 passes for 116 yards.

Matt Mueller had Estancia's only touchdown, a one-yard run with 4:14 left in the third.

Eddie Vailolo scored Garden Grove's final touchdown in the fourth quarter with 8:43 left. Vailolo rushed for 49 yards in 11 carries. Estancia's Manu Tanielu rushed for 66 yards in four carries.

* Laguna Beach 24, Capistrano Valley Christian 7: Laguna Beach ended a 18-game losing streak and 22-game winless streak. It was Artists' first victory on the field since 1995, when they defeated San Diego Southwest, 28-0--28 games ago. Their last victory came in the final game of the 1995 season, when Estancia had to forfeit its 47-0 victory.

Pat Chesley opened the scoring on a 62-yard run for the Artists (1-2). Chesley gained 131 yards in 23 carries.

Ryan Schissler completed 13 of 21 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown, a one-yard pass to Travis Loidolt with 32 seconds left in the first half. Schissler gave the Artists a 24-0 lead in the fourth quarter with a 34 yard run.

* Corona del Mar 34, Agoura Oak Park 6: Michael Bergey completed 13 of 19 passes for 200 yards and four touchdown passes for Corona del Mar (2-1).

The Sea Kings scored five consecutive touchdowns. Justin Shea and Grant Estabrook had touchdowns in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Kurt Sumner and Evan Heard scored on passes from Bergey.

Hunter MacDonald scored Corona del Mar's final touchdown on a 34-yard pass from Bergey with 10:06 left in the fourth quarter. Corona del Mar's Nate Lemmerman rushed for 129 yards in 18 carries.
