September 26, 1998|GREG ANAPOL

Alemany High relied on big plays Friday night to remain unbeaten.

Defensive back Bryson Atkins scored on a 36-yard interception return on the game's third play from scrimmage, and the Indians weathered a sluggish first half to defeat Torrance, 27-13, in a nonleague game at Alemany.

After Torrance (0-3) took a 13-7 lead in the second quarter, Deon Scott returned the kickoff 97 yards for a game-tying touchdown.

Alemany (3-0) led, 19-13, at halftime despite recording only two first downs. The go-ahead touchdown came on a 14-yard scoring pass from Casey Clausen to Joe Fama late in the second quarter.

Clausen completed seven of 18 for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Clausen's 15-yard scoring pass to Reggie Kinlaw with 8:30 remaining completed the scoring.

De'Andre Scott rushed for 86 yards in 11 carries for Alemany.

Torrance, utilizing a ball-control, short passing game, ran 73 plays from scrimmage compared to 32 for Alemany.

Sean Judd caught 16 passes for 159 yards and rushed for 55 yards in 14 carries for Torrance. Judd scored on a five-yard run and caught an 18-yard touchdown pass.
