Event to Aid Rancho Mission Viejo Preserve

September 30, 1998|CHRIS CEBALLOS

Wilderness lovers can make "A Date With Nature" to help preserve Orange County's open land.

The annual fund-raiser for the Rancho Mission Viejo Land Conservancy includes hiking, music, wild animal displays, hands-on biology demonstrations, mountain-lion slide shows, a scavenger hunt, a silent auction and a catered barbecue.

Held at Campo Amantes from 4 to 9 p.m., the event supports educational programs, equipment for trail maintenance and insurance for the wilderness reserve.

Reservations are required by Monday for the Oct. 10 event.

Last year, 159 families turned out for the event, raising more than $16,000 for the 1,200-acre, nonprofit preserve in the coastal foothills east of San Juan Capistrano.

The conservancy regularly offers guided nature walks, wildlife workshops, night hikes, astronomy nights, natural history lectures and other outdoor studies programs.

Volunteer opportunities for students, biologists, geologists and others are available.

The cost is $50 per person or $100 per family.

For reservations, call (949) 489-9778.
