Katella's Stafford Sets School Mark

Katella's Cortney Stafford set a school record in the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet 3 inches in the Knights' 107-26 victory over Century in Empire League girls' track and field.

Stafford's mark is the second best in the county this season. She also anchored the winning 400-meter relay team (53.1), tied for first in the high jump (4-0), and won the long jump (15-2).

Katella, ranked 10th in the county, is 3-0, 2-0.

In Century League girls' track and field:

No. 6 El Modena 107, Orange 19--Vicki Bloom, Julia Fukahara and Samantha Meredith each won two events for visiting El Modena (2-0 in league). Bloom won the 100 and 300 hurdles, Fukahara the 200 and long jump, and Meredith won the shot put and discus throw.

In the Orange League:

Savanna 88, Anaheim 38--Reanita Starr won the long jump (17-9) and triple jump (35-9 1/2) for host Savanna (1-1). Starr also ran in the winning 400 relay for the Rebels.

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 98, Costa Mesa 38--Allyson Marquand won the 880 and mile to lead host University (2-2, 1-1). Marquand finished the 880 in 2:23.6 and the mile in 5:19.

In the Sea View League:

No. 3 Santa Margarita 81, Corona del Mar 54--Amanda Shanklin finished first in the 300 hurdles in 44.54 for Santa Margarita (4-0, 2-0). Christine VonderAhe won three events (long jump, triple jump, pole vault) for the Eagles.

Woodbridge 73, Newport Harbor 56--Amber Steen won three events for the host Sailors (2-1, 1-1). Steen won the 800 in 2:28, the 1,600 in 5:18, and the 3,200 in 11:37.9.

Teammate Meryl Stone won the 100 (12.3) and the long jump (16-7).

Woodbridge is 2-0.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 73, Dana Hills 63--Freshman Marquita Taylor won the 200 (26.4) and 100 (12.3) for host San Clemente (3-1, 2-0).

In Empire League boys' track and field:

No. 7 Katella 84, Century 52--Bob Nita won the 200 in 23.2, and the 400 in 52.7 for visiting Katella (2-0 in league). Nita also ran on the winning 400 relay team.

In the Orange League:

Western 74, Valencia 57--Dajuan Pannell won two individual and two relay events for host Western (3-2, 2-0). Pannell won the 220 in 23.6 and the 440 in 55.9.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 98, Laguna Beach 32--Christian Monterosso was a double winner for Laguna Hills, winning the 200 (24.5) and the 400 (52.2). The Eagles are 2-2, 2-0.

In the Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 81, Woodbridge 45--Curt Herberts won the 800 (2:06.2) and 1600 (4:37.8) to lead the host Sailors (2-0).

Teammate Trevor Jones won the 110 (15.5) and 300 hurdles (39.9) and Morgan Curtis won the long jump (19-3 1/2) and triple jump (40-0 1/4).

Woodbridge dropped to 1-1.

In the South Coast League:

No. 2 Mission Viejo 104, Trabuco Hills 32--Scott Crowson won the 110 (15.3) and 300 hurdles (40.6) and Mike Didiola the shotput (52-2) and discus (132-4) for Mission Viejo (2-0, 2-0).

Dana Hills 77, San Clemente 58--Kai Lewis was a triple winner for host San Clemente for the fifth meet in a row. Lewis won the 100 in 10.6, the 200 in 22.2, and went 20-4 in the long jump.

In Sea View League golf:

No. 1 Santa Margarita 193, No. 7 Irvine 209--Steve Conway shot one-under-par 35 for the Eagles (7-0, 3-0) at Oak Creek. Santa Margarita freshman Taylor Wood and Irvine's Mike Lavery each shot 38.

Newport Harbor 193, No. 10 El Toro 202--Freshman Daniel Kush had two birdies and shot par 36 at the El Toro Marine Base for Newport Harbor (6-2, 2-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 179, Laguna Hills 193--Aliso Niguel's Ryan Schuyler and Joe Duffin and Laguna Hills' Mike Lee shot one-under 35 at Laguna Hills Leisure World. Aliso Niguel's Andrew Wahlert shot 36 and made an eagle on the 471-yard par-five ninth hole.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 203, Esperanza 203 (HB wins in a two-hole playoff)--Matt Fletcher led Huntington Beach with a one-over 36 at Yorba Linda. The Oilers won the playoff, 22-21.

No. 8 Los Alamitos 203, Edison 207--Brett Dolch birdied the last two holes to shot one-over 37 at SeaCliff for Los Alamitos (2-0 in league).

In Garden Grove League softball:

No. 2 Pacifica 8, Los Amigos 0--Toria Auelua and Mallorie Lenn each had three RBIs and Jessica Soto and Heidi Lundblad combined on a no-hitter for Pacifica (10-2, 3-0). Los Amigos is 9-4, 2-1.

Rancho Alamitos 13, Bolsa Grande 0 (6, mercy)--Kristina Hyllested pitched a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts and also hit a home run for visiting Rancho Alamitos. Jami Weddle hit a three-run home run, her fifth, for the Vaqueros (7-8, 2-1).

In nonleague softball:

St. Margaret's 2, Laguna Beach 1--Tracy Sherman hit a run-scoring double in the third inning for visiting St. Margaret's (5-6).

Westminster 1, La Quinta 0--Laurie Tolen had a base hit to score catcher Elizabeth Gonzalez in the fourth inning for Westminster (7-4-1).

In Sea View League boys' tennis:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 17, No. 2 Woodbridge 1--Seniors Curtis Ellmore and Sam Shamardi swept in doubles, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1, for the Sea Kings (9-0, 4-0).
