Smells Like . . . Something New

April 08, 1999|BOOTH MOORE

Room fragrance sprays have come a long way since the days of lemon-fresh Lysol. Not just for the bathroom anymore, today's mood-altering aromas can make an oasis out of any room.

Having a dinner party? Pick up some pastries from the local bakery then tell guests you baked them. With a few squirts of Crabtree & Evelyn's Patisserie room spray, no one will know the difference. Other scents in the Cooks line of room sprays include Salad Greens and Orange-Ginger. They're about $8 at Crabtree & Evelyn stores.

Smell This is a collection of scents designed to trigger emotions and memories. Take a mini-vacation with Beach Smell, or pretend you're back under mom's roof with Fresh Towels. No time to wash a shirt before a big date? No worries, a few sprays of Clean Wet Laundry and you're ready to go! About $9.50 at Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom.

Trapp room fragrances can transform a room into a private garden with such botanical flavors as Fresh-Cut Tuberose, Gardenia and Summer Flowers. The essence of Terra Mater (Mother Earth) smells of wet soil and fresh rain. $12 at the Townhouse Ltd. in West Hollywood.

Even Glade has gotten into the luxury room-spray act with a line of Simple Escapes Aromatherapy Sprays. The refreshing citrus scent will whisk you away on an island vacation, and the vanilla may help calm the nerves. About $3 at grocery stores.
