Fluker Steps Aside at Chatsworth

April 10, 1999

Fluke Fluker, boys' basketball coach at Chatsworth High for the last five years, has decided to relinquish his coaching duties and will be replaced by assistant Emad Whitney.

Fluker said he will continue to handle administrative responsibilities, calling himself Chatsworth's "general manager" and "player personnel director," but Whitney will serve as coach during games and practices.

Whitney, 25, was Chatsworth's girls' coach for three years and has been an assistant to Fluker for the last two seasons.

BASEBALL

* Gavin McCrory, an infielder from Conestoga High in Devon, Pa., and son of former major league outfielder Lenny Dykstra, signed a letter of intent Friday to play for Cal State Northridge.

McCrory, a right-handed power hitter who can play third base and shortstop, is the first out-of-state player signed by Northridge in Coach Mike Batesole's four seasons.

Batesole and Dykstra were teammates at Garden Grove High in 1980 and '81.

Dykstra has maintained Southland ties, opening a car wash last year in Simi Valley.

* Freshman left-hander Andy Davidson of Northridge has been selected Division I Independent Baseball pitcher of the week for the week of March 28-April 3.

Davidson earned the honor for the second time in three weeks after throwing 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief against USC last Saturday.

* Bryan Gant, a former Chatsworth outfielder who is a freshman at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, is on a hot streak in Big West Conference play. Gant is batting .476 (10 for 21) with six runs batted in.

* Several former players from the region have helped Chico State to a 27-10 record. Luis Sanchez, former Hart and College of the Canyons infielder, is batting .333. Robb Rehfeld, former Alemany and Canyons outfielder, is batting .306. Steve Guerrero, former Poly and Valley outfielder, is batting .306. Phil Derryman, a pitcher from Moorpark College, is 3-1 with a 2.93 earned-run average.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Tim Adrian of Moorpark High, who placed fifth in the discus in the 1998 state championships, has signed a letter of intent with Syracuse.

Adrian took recruiting trips to Texas Tech, Florida State and Syracuse before signing with the Orangemen.

Candy Roberts, throws coach at Cal State Northridge from 1995-98, will coach Adrian at Syracuse.

TENNIS

* Mike and Bob Bryan, from Rio Mesa High and Stanford, will participate in the Pro Tennis Charity Extravaganza on Sunday at Spanish Hills Golf and Country Club in Camarillo.

Proceeds will benefit Child Abuse and Neglect, a division of Interface, a family services organization.
