Volunteers to Help Repair Park Trails

April 24, 1999|HOLLY J. WOLCOTT

Low-security inmates from the Todd Road Jail and a Thousand Oaks bicycle patrolman will be among those at Thousand Oaks' Sycamore Canyon Park today helping to repair damaged trails.

The outing is part of State Trails Day, an annual event organized by the state Parks Department. Volunteers and inmates will work today and Sunday using digging equipment and dirt made available by the Parks Department.

"The main goal is to make the trails safer and more enjoyable," said Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Donoghue, a bicycle officer who will supervise the seven inmates.

Businesses in Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park donated funds to pay for a deputy to supervise the inmates, all of whom volunteered for the assignment.

Volunteers will also include members of the Concerned Off-Road Bicycling Assn. and local residents.

The trail repair will occur in an area of the park at Lynn and Potrero roads in the Santa Monica Mountains. Anyone can show up and help, Donoghue said.
