Captain Promoted to Chief of Airport Police Force

April 24, 1999

LOS ANGELES — Bernard J. Wilson, a 20-year veteran of airport police work, has been appointed chief of the airport police at Los Angeles International Airport. In that post, he will be in charge of more than 500 law enforcement and security personnel at the airport, a spokeswoman said Friday.

LAX's Airport Police is one of the largest airport law enforcement organizations in the world. The airport serves more than 61 million passengers a year and accommodates 112 airlines.

Wilson, 46, succeeded acting Chief John Bangs on Thursday. Wilson was promoted to the chief's position from the rank of captain, which he held since 1988.
