Map about Town

April 25, 1999|Jason Dietrich

For many a bewildered tourist in London, unfolding a bedsheet-sized city map to locate Big Ben might be akin to hoisting a flag: "Yes, I am a lost tourist, look at me!" Enter Popout Maps from England, laminated guides that fold out like an accordion in the palm of your hand.

The U.S.-based Map Group, which distributes more than 75 Popouts, says the London map is one of its biggest sellers. It features bus and subway routes, and pinpoints cultural highlights (Harrods, the Horse Guards). Other Popout cities include the usual suspects, but there are also surprises: Martha's Vineyard, Edinburgh and Marseilles.

Single-fold maps, $3.95; double-fold, $5.95. At major bookstores and Noteworthy in Santa Monica; (800) 617-6768.
