Lancaster Roughs Up Giants' Gardner

The Lancaster JetHawks scored early against right-hander Mark Gardner, the opening-day starter for the San Francisco Giants, and went on to defeat the San Jose Giants, 9-5, in a California League game Wednesday night in San Jose.

Gardner, who made a rehabilitation start, left with the score tied, 4-4, after reaching his pitch limit in the fourth inning. He allowed four runs and six hits, striking out six and walking one.

Joel Ramirez had two hits and three runs batted in, and Craig Kuzmic had three hits and two RBIs for the JetHawks (9-11).

AROUND THE LEAGUES

Triple A--Second baseman Adam Kennedy (Cal State Northridge) had three hits, including a grand slam and a triple, for Memphis (Cardinals) in a 10-6 victory over Salt Lake. . . . Center fielder Gabe Kapler (Taft High, Moorpark College) had three hits, including a two-run home run, for Toledo (Tigers) in an 8-5 victory over Louisville.

Double A--Left fielder Darrell Dent (Montclair Prep) had three hits to help Bowie (Orioles) beat Akron, 8-4. . . . Designated hitter Eric Gillespie (Cal State Northridge) had a home run among his three hits for Jacksonville (Tigers) in a 10-4 victory over Chattanooga.

Class A--Catcher Brian Luderer (Crespi) had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs for Modesto (Athletics) in an 11-5 victory over Rancho Cucamonga. . . . Center fielder Junior Brignac (Cleveland) had three hits, including a home run, for Macon (Braves) in a 7-5 loss to Columbus.
