Abraham Lincoln Elementary dedicated its new marquee Thursday to the memory of former students, including Jim and Rob Toring.

Jim, one of the nation's top water polo players, died in April, 1998, when the bus he was traveling in with the U.S. national team was hit in Paris. He was 23.

Rob Toring, Jim's older brother, was a top equestrian, youth water polo coach and a Regents Scholar at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Rob died in 1996 at age 28 from complications related to AIDS, according to Hank Toring, Rob's father.

The brothers attended Lincoln, where their mother, Sandy Toring, has spent her entire teaching career.

Sandy Toring said the PTA's decision to dedicate the marquee to her sons, as well as other Lincoln children who have died, made her feel proud and humble.
