Arafat, Estranged Ally Hold Talks

August 23, 1999|From Times Wire Reports

Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat and estranged comrade Nayef Hawatmeh held talks in Cairo aimed at reuniting Palestinian factions ahead of peace talks with Israel. It was the first meeting in six years between Arafat and Hawatmeh, leader of the radical Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, based in Damascus, Syria. Arafat and Hawatmeh had a falling out over the Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement signed by Arafat in Washington in 1993 after secret negotiations in Oslo.
