LAKE VIEW TERRACE — A fire in a two-story house Saturday night killed an elderly woman and injured two people, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The single-family home in the 11400 block of Sunburst Street near Eldridge Avenue was possibly being used as a drug lab, spokesman Jim Wells said.

"Apparently there are some chemicals there," he said. The cause of the fire, which may have involved a chemical explosion, was being investigated by a hazardous materials squad.

If evidence of criminal activity is found, the Los Angeles Police Department will join the investigation, said Sgt. Terry McBride of the LAPD's Foothill Division.

The blaze started about 7:40 p.m. and burned for almost an hour before it was contained by nine fire companies. Four people escaped from the house, two of whom sustained minor injuries jumping from second-story windows, Wells said.

A man in his 30s hurt his leg and ankle and a woman in her late 20s suffered facial cuts. Both were treated at the scene.

Authorities have not yet identified the woman who died.
