Detroit, which knocked off UCLA in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season, boasts one of the nation's top scorers in guard Rashad Phillips. An excellent long-range shooter, Phillips averages 26.4 points and is shooting 51.9% from the field, 44% from three-point range and 94% from the free-throw line. Guard Brandon Armstrong leads Pepperdine with a 15.8 scoring average. Forward Tommie Prince averages 11 points. The Waves will play either Miami or Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday. Also in the tournament are Auburn, Illinois State, Virginia Tech and Puerto Rico-Mayaguez.
