“The census is a series of operations. And we want to finish every one of them on schedule. The next big operation is when the census takers go to the homes that haven’t mailed in the forms. Based upon history, we will have to hire 20,000 in this region to do that. It’s almost like going to war.”

LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Gaining local support for the census from school superintendents, mayors and boards of supervisors, which have established count committees to encourage people to cooperate with the Census Bureau. And opening 42 local census offices, 18 in Los Angeles County.
GOALS FOR 200O: Hiring 20,000 census takers in the region to go to the homes that haven’t mailed in the census forms, and overseeing the accuracy and coverage evaluation survey that tells the Census Bureau what the undercount/overcount is for a given region.
