Office Space Approved for More LAPD Counselors

February 03, 1999|PATRICK McGREEVY

As part of LAPD Chief Bernard Parks' plan to increase the availability of psychologists to police officers, the City Council has approved the lease of an office in Encino for a larger staff of counselors.

The Los Angeles Police Department has nine psychologists whose job is to help officers deal with the stress of their jobs, and Parks has proposed to nearly double the number in next year's budget as part of a move to improve mental health services.

Currently, the LAPD keeps an office on Ventura Boulevard with space for one psychologist.

The council voted Friday to lease a larger office, also on Ventura Boulevard, so three psychologists can be assigned to work in the San Fernando Valley.
