Jim Brown Charged in Threat to Wife

July 02, 1999

LOS ANGELES — Hall of Fame football player and actor Jim Brown was charged Thursday with threatening to kill his wife and smashing her car windows with a shovel.

City Atty. James K. Hahn filed one count of making a terrorist threat and one count of vandalism, both misdemeanors, against Brown, 63, for an alleged incident at the couple's Hollywood Hills home on June 15, said Lara Bloomquist, supervising attorney.

Brown was arrested that night after his wife, Monique, 25, called 911 at 6:50 p.m. He was booked at the Hollywood station and posted $50,000 bail.

Monique Brown later held a news conference outside their home and said she had overreacted. She denied that threats had been made against her.

Brown is scheduled to appear in Municipal Court on Tuesday to enter a plea, Bloomquist said. He could receive up to 18 months in jail and a $2,000 fine if convicted on both counts.

Brown retired from pro football in 1966. Playing for the Cleveland Browns, he set many National Football League rushing and scoring records. His Hollywood movie credits include "The Dirty Dozen."
