Responding to complaints about abandoned shopping carts cluttering residential areas, streets and sidewalks, city officials are considering plans to combat cart theft from stores. City Manager Terry Matz said he will meet with supermarket managers over the next month to consider prevention plans. Options include having supermarkets install a small electronic device in a front wheel of each shopping cart, Matz said. The device is linked to an underground antenna on the store's property; when a cart is pushed to the perimeter of the property, it triggers a spring-loaded metal shell that drops under the wheel, effectively disabling the shopping cart.
