Steinberg Stays Alive by Shooting 72

Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys shot one-over-par 72 Saturday to stay in the running for his fifth Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur Championship on the Zaharias Course at Industry Hills Golf Club in the City of Industry.

Steinberg's 73-75-72--220 puts him five strokes behind leader Scott McGihon of Bermuda Dunes, who is at 69-74-72--215 heading into the final round of the 100th SCGA Amateur today on the Eisenhower Course at Industry Hills.

John Pate of Santa Barbara is second at 70-74-72--216, with Mark Etue of Carlsbad third at 70-76-72--218.

Steinberg is tied for fourth with Scott Almquist of Santa Ana, who is at 74-74-72--220, James Stewart of San Diego, who is at 75-72-73--220, and James Camaione of Upland, who is at 75-70-75--220.

David Johnson of Palmdale came in at 76-75-75--226.

Derek Patao of Sherman Oaks was disqualified when he failed to show for his tee time after shooting 78-74--152 in the first two rounds.

BASEBALL

* Joshua Harris, formerly of Calabasas High and Pierce College, will play baseball at the University of San Diego next season.

At San Diego, Harris, a junior-to-be who played shortstop at Pierce the last two seasons, will play for Rich Hill, former Cal Lutheran and USF coach.

SUMMER CAMPS

* The Louisville Slugger Baseball Academy is scheduled for July 27-31 at Pleasant Valley Park in Camarillo.

The camp will be directed by Jack Willard, former Camarillo High coach, and Mike Scyphers, former Simi Valley High coach.

* Two five-day sessions of the Moorpark College volleyball camp are scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon, Monday-Friday and July 26-30.

Cost of the camps is $95 per session or $175 for both.

Instruction will be provided by Steve Burkhart, Moorpark College women's coach, assistant Kevin Judd and Raider players.
