Thacher Student Gets 4-Year Scholarship

July 25, 1999

* Benjamin Wallace, a high school senior at the Thacher School in Ojai, has received an Amgen Foundation scholarship. The four-year college scholarship is awarded in cooperation with the National Merit Scholarship Corp. and covers tuition costs at the university or college of the recipient's choice.

Each year Amgen awards scholarships to children of employees in the United States and Puerto Rico who have achieved the status of a National Merit Scholarship finalist. The students are then evaluated on their academic records, community involvement and other criteria.

CLU Graduate Wins Film Festival Award

* Penny Yost, a 1999 graduate of Cal Lutheran University, won a Bronze Award at the Houston International Film Festival. Yost's film, "Popper," won in the college-student category. The film depicts a man whose life is ruined by his addiction to popping bubble wrap.

Senior Concerns Elects Slate of Officers

* John Crossan of Westlake Village was elected president of Conejo Valley Senior Concerns. Crossan will serve a one-year term. Also elected were vice presidents Phillip Spurlock, Diane Atkinson and Joy Hagestad; treasurer, Stan Rinaman; corporate secretary, Gerelda Selvin.

Senior Concerns is a nonprofit agency dedicated to providing quality-of-life community programs for the frail elderly and memory-impaired senior citizens.
