Landmark Status for Rock on Agenda

July 26, 1999|ERIC C. SANITATE

The City Council is expected to consider landmark status for a 60-foot-tall boulder at the foot of the Santa Susana Pass at its meeting tonight.

The city had proposed shaving 15 feet off the rock to widen Kuehner Drive. But that plan was scuttled after a neighborhood campaign against it.

The road was to be widened to make a curve safer for motorists and to accommodate traffic created by a 29-unit housing development called Rocky Pointe.

Landmark status, which has been recommended by the Ventura County Cultural Heritage Board, would prevent any changes to the rock.

Because the city's General Plan still calls for the widening of Kuehner Road, officials must either change the plan, change the proposed roadway design or change the rock's historic designation before moving forward with the project.
