Gates Elementary School will be rebuilt by the end of August, Saddleback Valley Unified School District officials said.

The school was gutted this summer so that new lighting, air conditioning, carpets, computer and telephone lines and two new classrooms can be added. Handicap-accessible restrooms and ramps also will be built. Superintendent of Construction Frank Conte said nontoxic asbestos was removed from floor tiles in classrooms.

The school board authorized spending $1.2 million on modernization of Gates. Local developers will contribute about $200,000 in fees to the project, officials said. At least nine other district schools are scheduled for similar modernization projects during the next few years.
