Puerto Rican Parade, Celebrations Planned

May 04, 1999

MONTEBELLO — Los Angeles County's first Puerto Rican Parade is scheduled for May 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., along Montebello Boulevard. It will be part of a weekend of activities meant to celebrate Puerto Rico's culture and history.

The parade will be modeled after New York City's annual Puerto Rican parade, which attracts hundreds of thousands of people each year, said Stefanie Barnfield, a member of California Puerto Rican Parade, a nonprofit organization created a year ago to organize the parade.

Other events planned for that weekend include a carnival at Montebello City Park at 8 p.m. on May 14, a festival for children at the park at noon May 15 and a celebration at Almansor Court in Alhambra at 7 p.m. May 15.

A music festival featuring bands from Los Angeles and Puerto Rico will follow the parade.

For information, call the parade organization at (310) 830-7883.
