Barneys Names Ex-Federated Chief Its CEO

May 06, 1999|Abigail Goldman

Barneys New York said it named Allen Questrom, former head of Federated Department Stores Inc., to take over as chairman and chief executive. He succeeds Tom Shull, who has held that position for about a year. Shull had said earlier this year that he planned to leave the luxury retailer. Questrom, 59, has a long history as a turnaround leader. He took the helm as chief executive of Federated in 1990, a month after that company filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11. In the mid-1980s, he ran the company's Bullock's chain, before leaving for a two-year stint to head Neiman Marcus. At Federated, Questrom steered the company into deals with two ailing chains, R.H. Macy & Co., which Federated took over in 1994, and then Broadway Department Stores, which had 82 stores in California. Barneys, which has seven stores and 13 outlet stores, emerged from Chapter 11 in January.
