What's happening the next few weeks:

* The Santa Fe Opera opens its season in its new theater, above, July 2 with "Countess Maritza" in repertory with "Ariadne auf Naxos" and new productions of "Carmen," "Idomeneo" and "Dialogues of the Carmelites" through Aug. 28. * The Santa Fe Desert Chorale season begins June 27 under new artistic director Dennis Shrock. Concerts range from baroque cantata to contemporary music. . Performances continue through Aug. 15. 219 Shelby St. $28 to $30. (800) 905-3315.

* The Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival begins its summer season July 17 with a tribute to the Broadway and Hollywood film music of George and Ira Gershwin. St. Francis Auditorium in the Fine Arts Museum, northwest corner of the Plaza. $15 to $40. $75 for opening gala July 17. (505) 983-2075.
