El Segundo Catcher Is a Source of Power

May 06, 1999|GARY KLEIN

Alberto Concepcion, a senior catcher at El Segundo, is one of six players who began the week with a state-leading 13 home runs.

Concepcion, who has signed a letter of intent with USC, was tied with Michael Falco of Agoura, Marco Gonzalez of Chula Vista Eastlake, Roney Johnson of Roseville Woodcreek, Robert Perkins of Manteca Sierra and Ishmael Salas of San Diego Marian Catholic.

But on Wednesday, Concepcion hit two more homers in a 16-1 Bay League victory over Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The Southern Section and state record for home runs in a season is 20, set last year by Chris Martinez of West Hills Chaminade.

Concepcion, who had a state-record 70 runs batted in last season and has 49 this season, has four regular-season games remaining.

Chula Vista Eastlake High eclipsed the state season record for home runs by a team when the Titans clubbed their 53rd last week in their 21st game.

Eastlake broke the record of 51 shared by Glendora, Playa del Rey St. Bernard and Alameda Encinal. Glendora established the mark in 28 games in 1985, St. Bernard tied it in 25 games in 1988 and Encinal equaled it in 29 games in 1997.

Marlon Parmer of Verbum Dei, the Southern Section Division IV basketball player of the year, will attend New Mexico in the fall.

Parmer, a guard who averaged 26 points and nine assists a game, chose New Mexico over USC, Michigan and Nevada Las Vegas. He led Verbum Dei to consecutive section and Division IV state championships.
