Baseball: The third-ranked Titans (40-9, 21-3 in the Big West Conference) play at New Mexico State (17-33, 6-18) Friday through Sunday. Fullerton has a 3 1/2-game lead over second-place Nevada with six games to play. Titan starting pitcher Jon Smith, who has been troubled by arm and shoulder soreness the last three weeks, probably will be held out of the New Mexico State series in hopes the rest will put him back in top form for the Long Beach State series May 14-16 at Titan Field. Smith is 6-0 with a 1.83 earned-run average.
Softball: The Titans (31-24, 10-8 in the Big West) play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday in conference play at New Mexico State. Fullerton lost two of three games last weekend against Utah State and is in fourth place, two games behind first-place Pacific.
