Child Advocates Office of Los Angeles needs court-appointed special advocate volunteers to investigate the circumstances of children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect and make recommendations to the Los Angeles Superior Court. Volunteers must be at least 25 and have good communication skills. Training takes place in July. Orientation will be held May 13 and 18, June 9 and 14, and July 1 in Monterey Park. * YWCA of the Harbor Area in San Pedro needs women to mentor middle-school girls. A commitment of eight hours a month for six months is required. Information: (310) 547-0831.

* Young Artists International Inc., a nonprofit group in Los Angeles dedicated to the support, management and promotion of young, gifted musicians, needs volunteers for its second International Laureates Music Festival, from July 27 to Aug. 23, in the areas of bookkeeping, driving, ushering, ticket sales, media, mail and office management. * Rhapsody in Green in Studio City needs volunteers to help save an endangered species of butterfly in San Pedro. The group works with scientists weeding out exotic plants, planting native plants and restoring the butterfly's habitat. Information: (323) 654-5821.
