Varietal Oil

May 12, 1999|DONNA DEANE

The oil extracted from grape seeds has long been known for its healthful qualities. It also has a high smoking point, making it good for frying and sauteeing. Grape seed oil's natural flavor is light and delicate; Salute Sante has come out with a new line infused with organic herbs and spices. These flavored oils are bottled in UV-filtered glass, making for a long shelf life.

Basil, chile, roasted garlic, lemon and rosemary oil flavored grape seed oils, 8-ounce bottle $9.50, from HomeChef, Pasadena and Newport Beach.

Roasted salsa

There's nothing like a good salsa in your pantry to save you on a late-night dinner or when unexpected guests drop by. El Paso Chile Co. roasted salsa--made with fire-roasted tomatoes, chipotle chiles, corn and black beans--will satisfy the crowd along with the earthy looking red corn chipotle, white corn and New Mexican blue corn tortilla chips.

Roasted salsa, 16-ounce jar $6; and 10-ounce bag tortilla chips $4.75 from Williams-Sonoma stores.
