County officials gathered Friday to celebrate the groundbreaking of a permanent site for the San Fernando Health Center.

The 10,000-square-foot center, which will serve low-income families, should begin operating next May, said Gretchen McGinley, chief operations officer for Valley Care Health Centers.

The new location at 1212 Pico St. will allow more public transportation access, she said.

The center, a collaboration between the city of San Fernando and L.A. County, will have 13 examination rooms to serve adults and children, McGinley said. It will also have a small pharmacy, a lab and radiology services.

The 1994 Northridge earthquake destroyed the health center. Afterward, it continued to operate from a trailer in the San Fernando Courthouse parking lot. In 1997, it moved to its present site on Maclay Street.
