SAN DIEGO — Dave Magadan's two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a four-run rally that gave the San Diego Padres a 7-6 victory Wednesday night over the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Padres drew to within 6-5 on a run-scoring wild pitch by reliever Ricky Bottalico and a sacrifice fly by Tony Gwynn, setting the stage for Magadan.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Mark McGwire's two-run home run in the first inning--his eighth of the season--and a run-scoring double by McGwire in the third.
The Padres pulled to within 3-1 in a run-scoring double by Magadan in the fourth inning, but the Cardinals extended their lead to 6-1 with a three-run fifth.
A two-run home run by Veras in the seventh cut the Padre deficit in half.
