Council OKs Bid to Name Building for Alatorre

May 22, 1999

LOS ANGELES — A City Council motion to name an Eagle Rock community center for Richard Alatorre was criticized by two of the outgoing councilman's colleagues Friday before lawmakers approved the name change.

The council voted 9 to 2 to call the Eagle Rock Community and Cultural Center in the 2200 block of Colorado Boulevard the Richard Alatorre Community Cultural Center.

Councilman Joel Wachs, who opposed the measure, said: "I don't think it's appropriate to name facilities after council members when they're still sitting."

Council member Rita Walters said she shared Wachs' objection and cast her vote against the motion, which was introduced by Councilman Mike Hernandez and City Council President John Ferraro.

Hernandez said he introduced the motion because Alatorre was instrumental in establishing the cultural center.

Alatorre was absent during the vote.
