Treatment, Not Jail, the Best Solution for Addicts

May 23, 1999

"A Lifeline of Words" (May 10) was the perfect portrait of what can happen when treatment is given a chance. Addicts should be in treatment, not only to benefit ourselves but also for our enormous potential to help other addicts stay clean. Wouldn't this be a better solution than spending millions of dollars to incarcerate folks whose ultimate contribution will be to serve years, decades, picking up cigarette butts in prison yards?

Lee Stringer is an inspiration to us all. With more program beds instead of prison cells, there could be thousands more Lee Stringers.
