Bike Clubs Will Take You for a Ride

Local bicycle clubs hold group rides nearly every day of the week in the county. Here is a sampling of regularly scheduled rides:

Sundays

* The Bicycle Club of Irvine offers two sets of Sunday rides--challenging formal rides of 40 to 60 miles and more relaxed social rides of 30 to 50 miles--both starting at 9 a.m. at Deerfield Park. * Orange County Wheelmen offer short (20-30 miles) medium (30-40) and long rides (40-60) starting from various locations (This Sunday, May 30, at 9 a.m. at Heritage Park in Irvine). Information: (714) 956-2453 or on the Web at http://ocw.org

Tuesdays

* SHARE Mountain Bike Club El Moro rides, meet at 6 p.m. Crystal Cove State Park Ranger Station for 2- to 2 1/2-hour rides. Riders are broken into three groups: fun, intermediate and advanced. Information: (949) 222-3334 or http: //www.sharemtb.com.

* OCW Lunch Bunch, 9:30 a.m., Karl's House, 2 Angell, Irvine. Medium- to fast-paced ride of 35 to 45 miles. One stop, for lunch. Bring lock and lunch money. Ride leader is Karl Bonawitz, (949) 786-7799.

* OCW hill training ride, 9 a.m., Switchback Cyclery at Albertsons Mall at Chapman & Jamboree, Orange

* BCI evening rides, 6 p.m., Deerfield Park, Irvine. Ride leaders Don Tillinghast and Ramona Dalton, (949) 551-8929.

Wednesdays

* OCW Lunch Bunch, 9:30 a.m., Mile Square Park, Fountain Valley. Enter park at the intersection of Heil and Brookhurst. Park by the tennis courts. Medium- to fast-paced ride of 30-40 miles with a lunch stop. Bring lock and lunch money. Ride leader is Cheryl McMurray, (714) 530-3418.

* BCI evening ride, 6 p.m., meet at Bayview Way near Marriott Suites hotel, Newport Beach. Ride is about 15 miles at casual pace on Back Bay loop. Ride leader is Richard Martin, (714) 964-9443.

Thursdays

* BCI evening ride, 6 p.m., Deerfield Park, Irvine. Ride leaders Julie Arden, (949) 786-4769 and David Powell, (949) 559-8028.

Fridays

* BCI morning ride, 9 a.m., Deerfield Park, Irvine. Fast ride, not for beginners. Ride leader Mike Farrell, (949) 487-9071.

* OCW morning ride, 9 a.m., Deerfield Park, Irvine. Moderate- to fast-paced ride of 35-45 miles. Ride leader is Henry Pilcher, (714) 998-5734.

* OCW evening ride, 6 p.m., fun 20 miles on the Santa Ana River trail. No signals, no cars, no turns, and return before dark. Eat at different restaurant each week after the ride. Meet at Batavia & Fletcher, Orange (Park in parking lot next to the pool). Ride leaders are Charley Simons and Donis Kinney, (714) 974-1216.

Saturdays

* OWC Century Series, 8 a.m., meet at Food Park, Main and MacArthur, Irvine. Unsupported, moderately paced century. Contact Jim von Tungeln (949) 786-9603 or Doris Bingo (714) 282-0949.

* OCW Stretch, 9 a.m., Food Park, Irvine. Moderate to fast-paced ride of about 30 miles. Ride leader is Henry Pilcher (714) 998-5734.

* OCW training, 8 a.m., Food Park, Irvine. Beginner and intermediate training group will ride and stay as a group. Informal lectures will cover stretching, nutrition and hill climbing. Led by Fred and Peg Bauer (714) 997-0892.

* BCI rides, 9 a.m., meet at Deerfield Park, Irvine. Three routes, 10-15, 15-25 and 25-35 miles, each with a stop midway for breakfast. Rides finish at about 11:30 a.m. Ride leaders Scott and Sandy Angle, (714) 960-4068.

* BCI rides, 9 a.m., meet at Ocean Ranch Village Food & Movie Center, Golden Lantern and Camino Del Avion, Dana Point. Two routes, 20-25 miles, 30-37 miles, with stop for breakfast. Ride leader Mike Farrell, (949) 443-2318.
