Laguna Beach Unified District's school board voted 3 to 2 to maintain its voluntary status, turning down a measure that would have paid each of the five members $240 a month.
The measure, if it had passed, would have cost the district $14,400 per year. As it stands, board members are eligible to receive health benefits, but do not get reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses such as stationery, travel, or mileage.
